Monday, June 5th, was just another spectacular day of weather. Our plan was to hike down to the pier on Windermere Lake, take a ferry down to the water-side town of Bowness-on-Windermere, hike around and up School Knott (761 ft), then come back down into Windermere for lunch. Here are a few shots I took while waiting for the ferry.
The purple line is the path we took from Bowness-on-Windermere to School Knott (761 ft), and on to the town of Windermere. The blue line is the path we took back to Bowness-on-Windermere, and on to Ambleside.
Someday I want to give these rowboats a try.
The light was gorgeous.
Local riff raff.
And so was the other Princess of the Lake.
The two Princesses.
Heading south on Windermere.
Great shot, eh?
This was the view looking east as we were approaching Bowness-on-Windermere.
We climbed up out of Bowness-on-Windermere, then turned north across meadows of buttercups.
The hike was as challenging as any other. But sometimes you’ve just gotta suck it up, Buttercup! 😉
The bees must have been going nuts.
Eventually, we reached a tarn on the southwest side of School Knott (761 ft).
We weren’t the only ones there. This cow was a talented fisherman. We watched it catch three fish. It has one in its mouth in this shot.
The tarn was a nice break before our final assault on School Knott, only about 100 ft above.
Have you ever seen tri-tone cows before?
Mary and Patty taking it in.
Here is the view looking northwest up to School Knott, showing a hiker at the top.
Mary and Andreas making the assault.
And this is the view looking northwest from School Knott (761 ft). That’s the town of Windermere to the right, with Bowness-on-Windermere down at the water at center and left.
Just another thing we’ve done together.
Then we were off, back into town.
This is a tree, with Andreas and Patty down below, the town and lake Windermere in the distance, and the Langdale Peaks far beyond.
This flower is called foxglove. It’s poisonous. Don’t eat it!
Once we made it to Windermere, we stopped for lunch at Cafe Italia, where we sat in the open second-floor window at right.
This is a great shot of the Langdale Peaks. That’s Pavey Ark (2297 ft) dead center, with Harrison Stickle (2402 ft) just to left, and Pike of Stickle (2326 ft) further to left in the distance. Great Langdale valley is at the base of the last two. Stickle Tarn, which we hiked to on Day 8, is at the base of Harrison Stickle.
The sky was as magnificent as the mountains, so I had to take a picture.
This is a postcard shot of the Low Wood Bay Hotel and marina.
Coming back into Windermere.
Back at Ambleside, this is a postcard shot of my Guinness and Patty’s Pinot on the patio at The Golden Rule. Note that the wine glass has markings for Small, Medium, and Large. My Guinness had a postcard head on it, but I was thirsty. Patty, ever the socialite, struck up a conversation with a young British couple at the bar, and unbelievably, the next day the young man would drive past us and wave as we were hiking in the middle of nowhere (actually, a small farm road near Troutbeck), over two miles away.
